EARTH DAY CLEANUP 2026 IS IMMINENT!!

Join us on April 18 at 9 am to get down and dirty picking up the trash that has accumulated around Straits Pond, Black Rock Beach, Crescent Beach, Jerusalem Rd, Atlantic Ave, and generally anywhere related to the Pond and the Weir River Estuary. Unfortunately, some citizens among us don’t give a thought to tossing their trash out of the windows of their cars or dodging the dump by throwing their household garbage along our roads or even into the Pond. These careless actions have a significant impact on the wildlife that we share our habitat with. Give them a break, no not the people who litter, the rest of us and the wildlife that surrounds us. It is a great opportunity to celebrate the end of winter and see how beautiful our environment is and hobnob (that used to be a word) with like minded neighbors.

Heck, we’ll even feed you when your work is done. It is our tradition and pleasure to have a cook out over an open grill and a gathering of the weary but faithful stewards of the Pond and Estuary. Don’t forget to feed us by joining the Straits Pond Watershed Association, the people who work on your behalf to care for the Pond by scientific studies, public outreach, community engagement, education, and strong advocacy before our public officials.

Here are a couple other things we are doing or involved in. Our Straits Pond History installation at the Panagea Church (Pope Memorial Church) in Cohasset was a very well attended event with at least 200 visitors. We are doing an encore at the Cohasset Public Library on Monday April13 through May 4. Drop by and learn how historic events around the Pond from the creation of our beloved granite ledges to the Gilded Age and recent events have enriched our Hull and Cohasset neighborhood environments.

We are not alone. The Straits Pond Watershed Association has a strong partnership with the Weir River Watershed Association and we form a great team of proud committed environmentalists who are working to keep our surroundings healthy. If you haven’t dropped in on Weir and Willow’s domestic life, turn off the wicked housewives of where ever and indulge in a real wildlife of romance and fidelity of this paired for life team as they raise the next generation of fish lovers.

🦅 Sad about how much plastic has appeared in Weir and Willow’s nest? Join our cleanup event on April 18th from 9-12!

♻️ WRWA will be manning the trash bag pick-up and drop-off station at the Estuary Center at 333 George Washington Boulevard in Hull from 9-12. SPWA will be operating out of Wadleigh Park in Cohasset. Come when you can; leave when you want. Bring gloves, boots, grabbers, or anything else you need to feel comfortable and protected while picking up trash. We will supply the town-approved bags.

🍦 Special treat for those participating at the Weir River or Straits Pond sites: free cookout and Nona’s ice cream at noon at the Atlantic Ave Playground in Hull, following the cleanup. Much love to Nona’s ice cream for being a steadfast sponsor of this annual event!

Last but not least, our growing fleet of floating birdhouses will be launched this week in time for the tree swallows to do their own annual thing of raising chicks that eat bugs instead of fish. We added five new birdhouses thanks to the diverse construction skills of our core members. We will have 14 condos out there and based on the full occupancy of our nine birdhouses last season we do not think we have solved the housing shortage yet. You too could become a landlord but you will have to wait for next year. The five new ones were sponsored quickly so keep watching the SPWA newsletter for the chance to get in on the next chance to help our midge eating friends.
